BIOS MATER project launched to transform Europe’s construction sector with bio-based innovation

The Association of Balkan Eco-Innovation (ABE) joined partners from across Europe in Zaragoza from 3–5 June to officially kick off the BIOS MATER project, a bold new Horizon Europe initiative focused on accelerating the shift toward a more sustainable construction industry.

The two-day event marked the start of a promising journey toward a greener and more resilient built environment. Participants shared visions, aligned on core goals, and outlined the collaborative work ahead — all grounded in bio-based innovation, circularity, and sustainable design.

ABE is leading Work Package 7, responsible for communication, dissemination, and public engagement across the project.

What BIOS MATER aims to achieve

The BIOS MATER project introduces a holistic approach to sustainable construction, with a focus on four key pillars:

  • Bio-Based product innovation: Developing new materials with enhanced durability, mechanical performance, and functionality for advanced building applications.
  • Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD): Prioritizing health, safety, and environmental protection throughout the full life cycle of materials and products.
  • Circular value chains: Embracing circular economy principles to create resource-efficient, scalable production systems for the construction sector.

Digital transparency & market uptake: Driving awareness, trust, and adoption through transparent digital tools and strategic communication.

With these foundations, the project will develop four innovative production routes for creating advanced, sustainable construction products.
